Inside My Shenzhen Sourcing Trip: What’s Next for Laidback Lee Design
Last week I flew to Shenzhen for a deep-dive sourcing trip—one of those fast, full, energising design missions that leaves your brain fizzing with ideas. I’ve always believed that great design starts long before it reaches a client’s home, and this trip was all about expanding what’s possible for our projects and future products.
From stone yards to bathroom innovation labs, to factories producing some of the most impressive custom furniture I’ve ever seen—Shenzhen delivered.
A New World of Stone Selection
There’s something grounding about walking through massive stone warehouses where slabs tower above you like chapters of the earth’s history.
Shenzhen had every variety imaginable: soft creamy travertines, striking marbles with dramatic veining, terrazzo-style engineered stones, and some incredibly beautiful recycled stone composites. Many of these options aren’t widely available in Australia yet, which is exactly why trips like this matter.
I spent hours comparing finishes, testing durability, and meeting suppliers who specialise in sustainable quarrying and advanced resin technologies. These are the pieces that end up defining kitchens, bathrooms and joinery moments—so the hunt is always worth it.
Bathroom Materials & Tech That Made Me Rethink Everything
China’s bathroom innovation scene is next-level.
I toured factories creating ultra-thin ceramic vanities, integrated basins in matte stone, and hardware engineered with the kind of precision that truly surprises you. Think:
Fingerprint-free metal finishes
Anti-bacterial glazes
Water-saving flushing systems
Seamless shower screens with magnetic seals
Smart mirrors that actually feel considered, not gimmicky
It was exciting, practical, and honestly, a reminder that the future of bathroom design is already here—it just hasn’t landed everywhere yet.
Manufacturing Technology: The Quiet Revolution
Designers talk a lot about craftsmanship, but there’s a whole other side to the story happening inside modern manufacturing facilities.
Laser-cutting systems, robotic sanding tools, automated timber curing rooms, 3D-printed joinery components—Shenzhen is quietly rewriting how pieces are made. And the result? More precision, more consistency, less waste.
This is the part that gets me excited for our kids’ line and our custom pieces. Technology means we can create designs that are lighter, stronger, more sustainable and more customisable without losing the soul of good design.
Custom Furniture: Where It All Comes Together
Walking the production floor of a custom furniture manufacturer is like watching your sketchbook come to life.
I was able to workshop new shapes, test mixed materials, explore pastel and earthy tones, and play with finishes that blend engineering with beauty. Everything from:
Bentwood prototypes
Recycled plastic moulding (in those perfect matte tones!)
French-inspired silhouettes
New leg profiles
Customisable drawer systems
It gave me so much clarity for upcoming client pieces—and especially for the kids’ dresser design we’re developing. Seeing the capabilities firsthand makes all the difference.
Why These Trips Matter
Being on the ground in Shenzhen reinforced something I already knew: sourcing isn’t about finding cheaper alternatives. It’s about finding better ones. It’s about innovation, quality control, relationships, and pushing boundaries for every Laidback Lee client.
Bringing these discoveries back to Australia means we can offer more thoughtful options, more custom moments, and more future-focused design across our projects.
