Mother’s Day Reflections – From One Mama to Another
By Stephanie Ferrara, Founder of Laidback Lee Design Studio & Host of Laidback Design Chat
Mother’s Day always brings a little pause for reflection. Amid the chaos of everyday life—design presentations, client calls, podcast recordings, lunchbox packing, tantrums, cuddles, and emails—I find myself sitting with a cup of coffee, marveling at the messy, beautiful blend of motherhood and creativity.
Running Laidback Lee Design Studio while raising two daughters is no small juggle. Some days feel like a perfectly styled flatlay, and others look more like a toddler's playroom after a sugar rush. But through it all, I feel this deep gratitude for being able to create something that’s mine—something I can pour my heart into, something that grows and evolves just like I do.
Building this business wasn’t just about interiors. It was about building a life that felt authentic. A life that allowed me to be present for the school pickups and the late-night design sprints. A life where I could show my daughters what it looks like to pursue something you love with grit, grace, and a little bit of chaos.
The Laidback Design Chat podcast was born from the same spirit—wanting to open up honest conversations about the real behind-the-scenes of running a creative business, navigating motherhood, and staying inspired when the juggle gets real. It’s been one of the most fulfilling things to connect with other women who are doing the same: chasing dreams, raising families, and carving out their own paths.
I often think about the little eyes watching me—how my girls see the early mornings, the late nights, the moments of doubt, and the wins that follow. I want them to know that it's okay to start small, to be messy in the middle, and to dream a little louder. I want them to feel the freedom to create, lead, rest, and rise in whatever rhythm feels right to them.
So this Mother’s Day, I’m holding space for the beauty of duality: for the tired and the inspired, the pulled-in-all-directions and the laser-focused, the soft nurturing moments and the fire-in-the-belly ambition.
To all the mamas building something—whether it’s a home, a business, a new chapter, or just getting through the day—I'm cheering you on. You're doing more than you know. And you're paving the way, just like I hope to do for my girls.
With love,
Stephanie xx
